Friday’s field hockey roundup | First Colonial, Cox cruise in showcases

First Colonial 6, Lakeland 0

Cox 2, Maury 0

VIRGINIA BEACH | When four of the top five field hockey teams in South Hampton Roads got together Friday at the National Training Center, it was a good look at what the upcoming Eastern Region Tournament might look like.

At least that's what the two winners are hoping.

No. 3 Cox defeated fifth-ranked Maury 2-0 in the first match, and No. 1 First Colonial mercy-ruled second-ranked Lakeland 6-0 in the second.

It was the first loss of the year for Maury (11-1-1) and Lakeland (14-1).

First Colonial defeated Cox in last year's region championship en route to the Patriots winning their first Group AAA state title.

Cox and Maury went back and forth for the first half, but the Falcons (10-5) scored the only goal they eventually would need when Courtney Daniels blasted in Jeannie Blackwood's penalty-corner injection pass about midway through the second half. Alex Brewer notched the insurance goal seven minutes later when she took a nice feed from Olivia Ward near the left post.

First Colonial (13-0) jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on a pair of goals by Kelly Chesson, both on assists from Haley Schleicher.

Schleicher, a freshman and the daughter of Patriots coach Beanie Schleicher, then went on a second-half tear, scoring three goals and assisting on another by Spencer Tossone. Chesson had assists on two and Brooke Hiltz assisted on the third.

First Colonial has been dominant so far this year and coach Schleicher said she is hoping Friday's showcase games were a sign of the future.

"Absolutely," she said. "We're not having any trouble finishing and we're really starting to figure things out in the rest of the game."
